KvarkenSpaceEco-Project in VCCC’19

KvarkenSpaceEco-project participates in the 2019 Vaasa Climate Change Conference & Networking forum. On thursday 26th of September, from 13:10 to 15:30 the project provides insights in to how space based technologies can help in combating the climate change. Excellent opportunity to learn about the state of the art of the current and future possibilities of space based technology!

The scientific conference will be held in the auditorium Wolffi, located in the Tervahovi building at the campus of the university of Vaasa.

The role of space based data in fighting the climate change

KvarkenSpaceEco has interesting content for session 2 on Thursday 26th. Theme of the session is “The role of space based data in fighting the climate change”.

Heidi Kuusniemi, director of Digital Economy, starts the session with describing what kind of data does space-based technology offer. Keynote speaker A.N. Arslan from Finnish Meteorological Institute provides a lecture on Copernicus programme and the opportunities it provides in monitoring and assessing the impacts of climate change. Additionally, team from KvarkenSpaceEco gives insights on how Kvarken Space Center and the Kvarken Space Eco -project will also contribute on climate change monitoring. Lastly, expert panel discusses the benefits of space in fighting the climate change.

13:30 – 14:30 Keynote lecture by A.N. Arslan: EU-Copernicus programme: Opportunities on Monitoring and Assessing Impacts of Climate Change.

14:30 – 14:50 Presentations by members of KvarkenSpaceEco-project: Kendall Ruthledge, Antti Kinnunen and Kannan Selvan: Mission KvarkenSat and the Kvarken Space Center – Contributions to also Climate Change Monitoring.

14:50 – 15:30 Panel and Q&A: Benefits of Space in Fighting Climate Change

Keynote speaker: Ali Nadir Arslan

Doctor Arslan is an expert in the fields of remote sensing methods and applications for cryosphere and electromagnetic theory and modelling. He holds doctorial and licentiate degrees of technology on space technology. Before being appointed as a senior scientist in FMI, he held the position of principal scientist for a decade in Nokia Corporation. He is also the chairman of the Copernicus Finnish user forum.

Vaasa Climate Change Conference & Networking Forum 2019

Vaasa Climate Change Conference & Networking Forum will be held in Vaasa from 26th to 28th of September 2019. This brand new, three-day event combines a scientific conference, science and nature films, and discussion forums. It brings worldwide knowledge, especially from the Nordic context, to Vaasa.

The event seeks to inspire broader audiences to pursue local solutions to fight against climate change. Researchers, students, business representatives, film-makers, politicians and decision-makers as well as organisations, citizens and families are welcome to attend this free event.

The programme has been published on the event’s website. The scientific conference (the first and the second day of the event) will be organised at the University of Vaasa. The programme consists of five sessions in which documentary films, scientific lectures and panel discussions are combined in a unique format. The third day is targeted for broader audiences – families and citizens interested in climate change – and features film screenings and artistic performances hosted at the Culture House Fanny and Vaasa Main Library Drama Hall.
